Marathon

Today I attended the annual Miles with The Giant Marathon here in Thunder Bay. Not as a competitor mind you, only as a spectator.

It was quite interesting. I wake up at 5:30am, which is probably the earliest time I've been awake in well over a month (aside from staying up that late). I drive to the marathon, arrive a bit early so I can get a coffee, and set up camp.

The turn out is amazing; hundreds of people gather in front of me in the once busy city street. The announcer counts down to the start, and the massive crowd takes off around the corner (one can only imagine what an unaware pedestrian around the corner was thinking).

Marathon's have always intrigued me. They are such a testament to the physical boundaries of the human body. No other animal could run for such a long distance. Of course, this is also due to the conscious effort we put forth into maintaining a consistent speed, but still; one cannot deny the sublimity.

Running a marathon has always been a goal of mine. It's been on my bucket-list since the day I first learned what a marathon was. Of course first I have to get into shape, and before that I'd have to have the mindset that allows one to get into shape. Until that mindset stumbles this direction, my death will have to wait.

All in all the marathon was pretty inspiring. Unfortunately, my step-brother came in last of the people who finished, but at least he beat out the people who quit half way through. Of course, it was Kenyans who won the race. Perhaps one day I'll win a marathon. Meh, another time.
